Is “Merry Christmas” Greeting Unofficially Ban?

December 11th, 2007 · No Comments · Religion

December 11, 2007

The Facts

For the past several weeks I have paid close attention to both TV and paper advertisements relative to the use of holiday greetings. Not once have I heard or seen the greeting “Merry Christmas”. Instead, I am hearing & seeing “Happy Holidays” and/or “Happy Hanukkah”. Naturally, I could have missed one that used “Merry Christmas”; therefore I will not say there are no ads with this greeting.

My View

(I have already posted one report with my view of this issue therefore I will not repeat what I said there except to say that I am not defending religion. In fact, I have strong feelings about the abuse & misuse of religion and God, although I am not an atheist. My protest here is about the omission of “Merry Christmas” based on political correctness.)

While I have no problem whatsoever with these two holiday greetings, I question the motive behind the obvious intentional use of these greetings without the use of “Merry Christmas”. The TV ad I saw today that prompted me to post a second report on this topic was an ad by Freedom Watch. I was struck by this particular ad because of the name of the organization. Their name implies that they’re an organization whose agenda is for the protection of all freedoms, but it appears they have one freedom they do not support. On the other hand, you could say they are just practicing their own freedom of not using the greeting “Merry Christmas”.

Because I have such strong feelings about the deliberant overall omission of this greeting based on political correctness, I have decided to further my actions of protest. Starting today with Freedom Watch I am going to registry my protest of the omission of “Merry Christmas” by any & all organizations, retailers, manufactures, etc. Where applicable, I will tell them I will not subscribe to any of their services or purchase any of their products because of this. If you feel the same way, I encourage you to join me. If not, then I encourage you to think of a similar freedom that, if lost because of political correctness, would upset you. Maybe that would have an affect on your view of this particular matter.
