The Decade When the U.S. Lost Its Way

Tax Rate for Richest 400 Taxpayers Plummeted in Recent Decades, Even as Their Pre-Tax Incomes Skyrocketed

"The financial reform bill will determine whether Wall Street’s banks will serve the American economy or whether the American economy will continue to serve Wall Street's banks."

"While the economy doesn't function for most of us ordinary workers, it yields considerable reward for those at the top."

Republicans Are Locked in a Passionate Embrace with a Corpse and Won't Let Go

"The most important thing Republicans think is that if there are Americans who can't afford the insurance policies that private insurers are willing to offer, then that's their problem."

"It should tell you everything you need to know that, in lobbying to retain its bank supervisory powers, the Fed's allies include the big Wall Street banks."

"[Texas Republican Jeb] Hensarling told a Texas-size whopper — and then tried to claim Republican credit for Bill Clinton’s budget surpluses."

"The Supreme Court's 5-to-4 decision last week giving American corporations the right to unlimited political spending was an astonishing display of judicial arrogance, overreach and unjustified activism."

"It was wrong because nothing in the First Amendment dictates that corporations must be treated identically to people."

"They backed the truck up to Fort Knox in broad daylight. They emptied it out, we rescued them and they get $150 billion in bonuses."

Dear Corporate America: Your taxes are NOT being raised. Your subsidy has expired! - The Old Man

"If we cannot as a nation move away from ideologically stimulated tribal warfare and scapegoating, we are in for a very unpleasant future"Retired Army Gen. Montgomery Meigs

“For big business to now claim that the government is ‘anti-business’ is like the umpire complaining about how badly his game was refereed”Kathryn Kolbert

“Rather than ‘all for one and one for all,’ the United States’ business leaders have adopted more of a ‘one for one and all for me’ approach, detrimental to our country's economic recovery”Amy L. Fraher

“Corporate executives excuse their inexcusable refusal to hire more workers and invest in new products and technologies with the tired old saw that it’s all the government’s fault. The Wall Street financial crisis has brought the economy to its knees and now the corporate sector has the audacity to blame government for the catastrophe?”Elizabeth Sherman

General Public Brainwashed On Oil Prices

May 22, 2008

The Facts

Crude oil hit $135 per barrel overnight and that’s the major topic on most news outlets this morning. Oil prices have now doubled over the past year. A gallon of regular gasoline is expected to hit $5 within the next 2-3 weeks, and diesel fuel will reach $6 a gallon before then. Continue Reading » »

Excuses For Rising Oil Prices

May 16, 2008

The Facts

In February of this year Turkish troops stormed across the Iraqi border for a three-day battle with guerrilla forces. The price of crude oil rose over $2 from that skirmish. Three weeks ago on April 25th a cargo ship working for the United States fired warning shots at approaching Iranian boats in the Gulf. This resulted in a $3 increase in the price of crude oil. Earlier this week a devastating earthquake hit China. Oil has now increased about $5 because of that tragedy. The official explanation for this latest price increase is that there will be a big increase in demand for oil because of the earthquake. Continue Reading » »

Bush Intent On Inflicting Maximum Damage To America

May 15, 2008

The Facts

“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along.” This was a statement made by President Bush today as he addressed Israel’s 60th anniversary celebration in Jerusalem. Although Bush denies that his remarks were aimed at Barack Obama, CNN reports that White House aides say the remarks were aimed at the presidential candidates AND others in his own party. After Seven Years Congress Finally Stands Up To Bush

May 13, 2008

The Facts

With monstrous support by Republicans, Congress has halted adding oil to our reserves. Several congressional members have been advocating doing this ever since speculators have run up the price of crude oil. The savings will amount to only 70,000 barrels per day, but many think this could send a signal that high oil prices will have a price of its own to pay. As of today, our reserves are 97% full at 701 million barrels. President Bush has been very adamant about not doing this in spite of the fact that oil is about $55 above what supply and demand calls for. Continue Reading » »

Banning Cigarette Sales In Pharmacies

May 12, 2008

The Facts

Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco wants to pass a law banning the sale of cigarettes in Pharmacies. His reasoning is that a place that sells products for healing and health care should not be selling items that are unhealthy.

My View

Before I start my ranting, let me say that this is not about defending cigarettes and the manufacturing of them. This is about reasonable minds. And if anyone misses that, then the following will be of no use to you. Continue Reading » »

American Democracy For Sale Via Super Delegate

May 9, 2008

The Facts

Steven Ybarra, Democrat super delegate from Sacramento, California wants to sell his vote for $20 million. The sale would go to either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. Ybarra claims he wants to use the money for educating Mexican-American voters.

My View

At my senior age I can remember a time when even the thought that someone would be caught selling their vote was enough to make them think again. However, in today’s world it’s not only thought about, not only put into action, but flaunted in the publics face. “To hell with democracy if the price is high enough” is the attitude today. The manifesto was put together by some conservative Christian leaders that include Os Guiness and Richard Mouw, as reported by a CNN article. Supposedly over 80 more evangelicals have signed the manifesto, which is to be released next Wednesday, May 7 2008. A quote from the document says “All too often we have attacked the evils and injustices of others, while we have condoned our own sins”. Already some evangelicals are criticizing the document. Why Democrats Should Pass The $70 Billion War Funding Request

May 2, 2008

The Facts

Today President Bush asked Congress for $70 billion to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The funding would be a bridge that takes the war from October 2008 through the spring of 2009. The latest request would bring the total to $875 billion since 911. Of that amount, over two-thirds have been for the war in Iraq. $2 billion of the requested $70 billion would go to Iraqi security force. Continue Reading » »
