The Facts
With nine days left before the elections, Republicans running for reelection have adopted a new tactic to improve their reelection possibilities; they are warning voters of serious problems with having both the legislative and executive branches controlled by the Democrats. With this new attack, it seems the Republicans have basically accepted that John McCain will not win the Presidency, and feel they are in danger of loosing more seats in Congress.
My View
The Republicans certainly ought to know just how dangerous it is to have both Congress and the White House under one party control. They and their President George W. Bush sure made a mess of things the first six years of Bush’s reign; a mess so devastating that it will take at least 100 years to straighten out, mostly at the expense of ordinary working folks.
As this article points out, both the Democrats and Republicans has had a strong hand in doing a disservice to the country when each of them respectively had control of both branches. This disservice was a result of the extremist minority in both parties controlling what policy and laws were enacted rather than the conservative majority. The neo-conservatives in the Republican Party have done more damage over the past eight years than the far left did during the Clinton years, but they both inflicted their fair share. According to the referenced article, the Democrats have acknowledged they went too far in the years they were in control, and promise not to do so again if they get control of both branches. We’ll see. But I fear with the likes of Nancy Pelosi, not much will change from the old far left.
The problem is the arrogant pay-back attitude the two parties have; under that attitude, they both govern as if there is no country, and they both feel they have to one-up the other once they get in control. They govern as if their party is the only thing that matters, and to hell with the country. Many would agree with this attitude.
The fear the Republicans have of loosing the White House, in addition to more seats in Congress, is reflected in yet another tactic they are embracing; spreading more fear of radical Islam. No doubt pointing a finger at Barak Obama. The Clarion Fund, a pro-Israeli group, has spent an estimated $50 million distributing videos about radical Islam. They seem to admit they hope it sways the election in November.
This latter episode is the problem with 501 (c) groups; they claim to be a non-profit organization, therefore they are not limited to how much they can spend or how they spend it in support of a particular candidate or party, and they are not required to reveal who their donors are. And you can bet our lawmakers won’t do anything about that, since it is they who gain from these groups. Sadly, the past two Presidential elections have had great success with this kind of fear spreading.
