Campaign 2010

Countdown to Congressional Elections

The most effective way to restrict democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: kings and princes, priestly castes, military juntas, party dictatorships, or modern corporations.

Random Thoughts on Other Notable Headlines of the Day — Issue XXVI

D.C. Taxpayers May Pay For New Hotel

The lawmakers of our nation’s capital city are debating whether or not to borrow three-quarters of a billion dollars to build a new hotel in Washington D.C. The hotel would be operated by Marriott. This means the taxpayers of that city would be financing the project, with no assurances they would ever see a profit or that the money would ever be repaid. Much like the country’s taxpayers will never see a profit on our investment in the financial institutions or the automotive industry.

WHY NOT!!?? Every city is doing it. Mayor Bloomberg of New York City tagged not only his city’s taxpayers, but the nation’s taxpayers as well, to build the new Yankee stadium for his friends. As I’ve said many times before, nothing is too good for the taxpayer’s money. The trend has long been set for socialized cost and privatized profits, and all we do is complain. We never scream loud enough or in unison to stop them, plus we keep voting them back in. So we must not have a problem with the upward redistribution of wealth.

Senator John Ensign Admits To Extramarital Affair

Republican Senator John Ensign of Nevada has admitted to an extramarital affair with one of his female staffers. According to the article, the affair was between December 2007 and August 2008. Unfortunately for him, in addition to having to admit to the affair, he probably will now have to face criticism for his very public criticism of Senator Larry Craig when Craig was accused of an attempted gay encounter in a men’s room at a Minnesota airport. What will be interesting is just how the Fox Fanatics will handle this issue. If history is any guide, Fox will suddenly have more interesting stuff to report such as the sex life of the tsetse fly.

Another Weird Religious Practice

According to this article in USA Today, “pregnant women who are Jehovah’s Witnesses are six times more likely to die during childbirth and three times more likely to have serious complications than the general population”. That’s because Jehovah’s Witnesses believe it is ungodly to “ingest” blood, therefore they refuse blood transfusions.

Well, they are not the first religious group to ‘pick and chose’ parts of the Bible to misinterpret and believe in while ignoring other parts, and they won’t be the last. Usually these ‘selected practices’ religious groups are formed to be intentionally different from any other group in order to draw their own crowd of followers. I mean, if you are going to be just one of the run-of-the-mill groups, why bother.

Federal Reserve Still Secretive On Who They Loan Money To

After a lot of hell raising by the public and lawmakers, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has told us that he has loaned or pledged $965 billion to 378 banks. But he won’t tell us which banks they were, how much each one received, or what they are doing with the money. (Navigate to page 9 of the PDF report to see the numbers.) Bernanke said that releasing the individual information on each bank would “make institutions reluctant to participate in the programs”.

Our government officials are so use to lying to us that they don’t know of any other way to approach the public. Bernanke is so full of crap that he couldn’t find a toilet large enough to dump it in. It makes one wonder if he truly thinks that the public believes him or if he just doesn’t care that they don’t. I vote for the latter. He and the banks had an excuse for not wanting the TARP money with the attached conditions, but there are no “excuses” here. The banks would have to close their doors without taxpayer money, and we all know it. Saying the banks would not participate in the program if the details were released is nothing more than insulting our intelligence. They just don’t want the taxpayers to know what is happening to our money and who’s putting it in their pocket. Period.
