If you’re not a Texan you may not have heard by now that the states’ GOP is dead-set on rewriting the history books of our great state to give a very (very, very) conservative view of the states history. As such, any historical happenings going back — oh, hell, since and before the Alamo, I guess — will not be included in the states history books if the Republicans deem it not conservative enough. Naturally, they will decide what’s conservative and what’s not.
You could choose any one of a number of articles to read the details of this Republican effort. But The Washington Post cites this:
Historians on Tuesday criticized proposed revisions to the Texas social studies curriculum, saying that many of the changes are historically inaccurate and that they would affect textbooks and classrooms far beyond the state’s borders. The curriculum plays down the role of Thomas Jefferson among the founding fathers, questions the separation of church and state, and claims that the U.S. government was infiltrated by Communists during the Cold War [bold/underline added].
The citizens of Texas have until May to stop this. Just six weeks. The states newspapers and TV stations have minimized the public awareness on this matter.
So this is the first step; what’s next? Banning non-conservative teachers and professors from our schools and universities? And students? If they’re successful in this history re-writing effort, why not? The majority voters in the state have already spoken out and said they’ll support anything the GOP does as long as the Democrats are kept out of office. And it appears the majority is in love with Gov. Rick Perry — the same Perry that wanted to secede Texas from the union.
One must think back over the last few years and what we-the-people have allowed to happen in the name of partisan politics. We’ve allowed our elected officials from both major parties outright lie to us on TV and the printed news and get away with it. We’ve said nothing except ‘you go’! The first thing that comes to mind is Karl Rove’s latest book, which every sane mind in the country admits it is nothing but lies for the sole purpose of rewriting history. Even those who support him and his kind know its lies, but it’s obvious it’s OK with them just as long as it’s bashing the other political party.
So you’re not a Texan and don’t give a damn what’s written about the state. Well, let me give you a little something to think about. When the GOP takes up the same cause in your state and wants to “eliminate” some one or some thing in your state’s history that is important to you, what do you plan to do about it? Or are you just going to sit back on your partisan haunch until it’s too late?
