Between March 27, 2008 and April 12, 2008 American Airlines voluntarily grounded 300 of their airplanes, canceling 3,300 flights. The grounding of the planes was to perform inspections of wiring harness that were mandated by the FAA. American Airlines failed to perform these inspections as scheduled for reasons yet unknown. The cancelation of these flights in the last week of the groundings stranded hundreds of thousands of people during a normal work week. A couple of weeks ago Southwest Airlines was forced to ground several of their planes to perform government required safety inspections that had been overdue for as long as 30 months. CNN filed a report tonight on the status of United Airlines’ outsourcing of the maintenance on their airplanes to China. In China, only supervisors are required to be licensed. China does not require drug & alcohol testing, and no background checks for security are performed.
A new airlines “Passenger Rights Bill” is supposed to take effect January 1, 2008. There is a lot of talk about this on the news and in other sources. All of the airlines are fighting to prevent the bill from passage.
