Bob Woodward’s new book, “The War Within: A Secret White House History, 2006-2008″, says “Bush maintained that U.S. forces were “winning”; privately, he came to believe that the military’s long-term strategy of training Iraq security forces and handing over responsibility to the new Iraqi government was failing”. Exerts from the book is quoted in this Washington Post article. According to the book, in 2006 Bush asked Stephen J. Hadley, his national security adviser, to lead a closely guarded review of the Iraq war, but warned Hadley of the upcoming congressional elections. A report surfaced a few days ago that said Iraq had an $80 billion surplus from oil production and sales. That money is being invested, much of it in American banks and businesses, rather than helping in war cost and reconstruction. Until about four weeks ago the Bush administration was being arrogantly stubborn about when we would pull out of Iraq. Vice-President Dick Cheney even got a lot of negative press with his “So?” response when he was presented with the facts that the majority of the American people wanted to end the war and pull out. And there are numerous other examples of the administration thumbing their nose at the wishes of the American public.
