Entering the primary season of the 2008 presidential election, John McCain was far from being the favorite to win the Republican Primary as viewed by most of the media and media talking heads. Rudy Giuliani was seen as the very big favorite, with Mitt Romney running a close second, and Fred Thompson coming in third. The only thing that kept McCain from being dead last was Ron Paul. Most of the far right was supporting Giuliani, with an eye on Romney if Giuliani faltered. With the exception of one news outlet, everyone has been, and still is, talking about John McCain changing his mind concerning regulating the business world, in particular the insurance and financial institutions. Beginning earlier this week, McCain has not only embraced regulation, but is demanding it in the face of the taxpayers being ripped off just to make a lot of rich people richer. He called it “reckless conduct, corruption and unbridled greed” on Wall Street. He went on to say “government has a clear responsibility to act in defense of the public interest, and that’s exactly what I intend to do. Since the televised appearance at the Saddleback church with Pastor Rich Warren, there has been a lot of discussion about the two Presidential candidates’ definition of “rich” relative to who should be responsible for paying the most taxes. Barack Obama used the figure of $250,000 while John McCain tried to avoid giving a number. He attempted to discuss what tax credits, etc should be given, eventually mentioning $5 million as a possible number, but then tried to make light of that number. The AFL-CIO has just invested $53 million in a campaign to force John McCain to address the plight of the American working people. They intend to have members follow him around in at least 23 states demanding that he address the economic issue.
